Questions people ask
How much does a concrete slab cost?
A slab is priced per m² and a foundation per metre, for your job: the area and depth, the concrete grade, the steel, access for the truck and what's under the slab. Send the job and you get a written price. The steel and membranes have fixed prices: an A393 mesh sheet is €79 to €104, a radon barrier roll €78 to €96. See our price guide.
How thick should a concrete floor slab be?
At least 150 mm of concrete on at least 200 mm of compacted, gas-permeable hardcore, under the Building Regulations (TGD C). Slab depth for an extension.
What concrete do I need?
C25/30 at least for a floor slab inside a building, C28/35 for many foundations, and a stronger mix for farm yards and slabs to S.100. Concrete grades explained.
How long before I can walk on it, or build on it?
Walk on it after a day or two, keep it damp and covered for the first 7 days, and it reaches its design strength at 28 days. How long concrete takes to cure.
What about the mess and access?
The truck has to get close, or a pump is needed. Tell the contractor about the gate, the lane and the turning space when you send the job.
